WHEN Angela Rippon burst onto the scene, she broke down barriers as the first female journalist to have a regular news reading spot on national TV.
Fast forward six decades, and the national treasure is now trying her hand at Strictly Come Dancing.
Who is Angela Rippon and how old is she?
Born on October 1944, Angela Rippon is a 78-year-old TV presenter from Plymouth, Devon.
Her father was a Royal Marine and her Scottish mother Edna was a seamstress.
After leaving school at 17, Angela began her journalism career as a reporter for the Western Morning News.
She later worked at the Sunday Independent and was an editor for the local news programme Westward Television.
Angela moved into broadcasting in 1966 as a presenter on BBC South West before becoming a regular presenter on the BBC's nine o'clock news.

In 1981 she co-presented the BBC's coverage of Lady Diana Spencer's royal wedding to Prince Charles.

What awards has Angela Rippon won?
Angela has been awarded many accolades.
In 1984 she was the subject of biography programme This is Your Life presented by Eamonn Andrews.
In 2004 Angela became an OBE and in 2014 she received an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from Plymouth University.
In 2017 she became a CBE for services to dementia care in her work with Dementia Friendly Communities.
What books has Angela Rippon written?
Angela is also an accomplished author having published 14 books.
In the early 1980s, she wrote a series of children's books about tree fairy called Victoria Plum.
Merchandise and a Christmas annual were released following on the success of the second series.
In 1982 she wrote a biography entitled Mark Phillips: The Man and his Horses.
Angela has also written keep-fit guides for the older generation including Stay Active, Stay Supple, Stay Healthy.
Is Angela Rippon married?
Angela met her first serious boyfriend, Christoper Dare when she was 17 at a YMCA dance.
She married the engineer in 1967.
The couple divorced in 1990 and had no children.
Angela is single, and in 2015 told the Daily Mail: “I've discovered I'm very happy being single.
“I suppose, if I'm honest, when your heart is broken it's painful and I don't want to go there again.”
