We\u2019ve probably all heard of or seen a menstrual cup, but this one in particular is making big waves in the period game with some users saying it\u2019s \u2018changed their lives\u2019.<\/p>\n
So we had to try it.<\/p>\n
When it comes to our periods, we like to think we could be like the girls in the cool adverts who, despite shedding their uterine lining, just cannot wait to jump on the back of a horse, dive into a pool or stay on top of their fitness regime in the gym.<\/p>\n
But instead we always find ourselves on the sofa in the fetal position, watching back-to-back episodes of dishy Captain Jason in Below Deck.<\/p>\n
With mood swings, bloating and cramps, periods don\u2019t exactly have us bursting with energy. Especially when we\u2019re suffering from a heavy flow. You know, the kind that gives you horrifying visions of Carrie at the prom or that horrible scene with the elevator in The Shining (if you know, you know).<\/p>\n
And while you may have tried an extra large tampon, a giant nighttime pad during the day or doubled up with both tampon and pad, it can still feel like it\u2019s not enough.<\/p>\n
But now there\u2019s a menstrual cup that is designed for heavier periods and customers have been left seriously impressed. <\/p>\n

Some reviews say that the suction element of other cups caused cramps and pains but this design is so painless and comfortable.<\/p>\n

\u2018I bit the bullet and tried the Nixit disc on day 2 of my cycle \u2013 notoriously a pretty heavy day. Let\u2019s dive in head first\u2026so to speak.<\/p>\n
\u2018Not going to lie, if you\u2019re squeamish, these discs may be a bit of an eye opener, because as you\u2019re trying to get the hang of using the darn thing, to borrow the title of that Daniel Day-Lewis film, there will be blood.<\/p>\n
\u2018After watching a few instructional videos and combing through the leaflet that comes with the disc, I felt pretty confident getting it in would be a cinch. While, sure, getting it into a comfortable position isn\u2019t that hard, provided you have room to pop a bit of a squat in your bathroom, it\u2019s a true art to make sure it\u2019s in the right position in order to catch the blood.<\/p>\n
\u2018Once it was in, I couldn\u2019t feel it and, true to reviews, I didn\u2019t have any cramps.<\/p>\n

\u2018I managed to wear it for 3 hours before curiosity got the better of me and I wanted to see how it was working. Firstly, simply hooking a finger under the rim and pulling it out wasn\u2019t possible for me (there is certainly some good strength in these kegels, apparently) but I found after essentially bearing down it peeked out from behind my pelvic bone and came out super easily.<\/p>\n
\u2018Still, things were incredibly messy. While I had only a tiny leak on a panty liner I wore as a safety measure, there was hardly any blood in the actual disc. It seemed to have been either pooling around it, cascading down when the floodgates were finally let open. <\/p>\n
\u2018Not sure what I was doing wrong, but determined to persevere I really made sure to push it down and back when reinserting, which, that time, meant it was hopefully sitting higher and in a better position. The next time I checked the disc it seemed to be doing a much better job.<\/p>\n
\u201dBesides the beginner errors, this is proving to be a nice alternative to tampons \u2013 which, despite having worn for nearly 20 years, I still live in fear of giving me TSS (I know, I know). <\/p>\n
\u2018I also feel like a total sustainable hun, so that helps.\u2019<\/p>\n
Another great thing about menstrual cups is that they save you a ton of money. The Nixit may be \u00a340 but it\u2019s completely re-usable. It\u2019s simple to clean with warm water and soap and between cycles you can sterilise it by boiling in hot water for five minutes.<\/p>\n
