Jane Moore has claimed Prince William’s World Cup absence was a “misstep” and could impact the future of the monarchy.

England’s women team suffered defeat in the nail-biting final against Spain on Sunday (August 20), after losing 1-0.

However, despite the team’s loss, the columnist has suggested William should have been front row and centre to support the women’s team.

Writing in her latest column for The Sun, she wrote: “But why the hell didn’t William hop on a flight with his young daughter and go in person to the game?”

The 61-year-old said the royals cheering from the stands would have been a great PR boost for the monarchy “but also in Australia, where the debate rumbles on over whether to dump the monarchy and become a republic”.

We’re sorry we can’t be there in person, but we’re so proud of everything you’ve achieved and the millions you’ve inspired here and around the world. So go out there tomorrow and really enjoy yourselves.”

Princess Charlotte, holding a football as she sat next to her father on a bench, added: “Good luck, Lionesses.”

Don’t miss…

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. Thank you for the footballing memories. Congratulations to Spain. W”

Some critics have suggested heir to the throne William, who is President of the FA, should have travelled to watch the clash against Spain and suggested it may have been different if the men’s team had played.

Social media users on Twitter appeared unimpressed, with one remarking “A letter? what a joke”, and another adding: “Big deal… he should be there.”

Former England goalkeeper Pauline Cope branded it a “shame” that William had not travelled to Australia, saying: “This should have been pencilled in his diary from day dot, after we won the Euros and qualified for the World Cup.”

Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer, who travelled to Australia to watch the match with Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, defended the royal, saying: “Prince William is, of course, the president of the FA and is a tremendous supporter of the sport.

“I know that he’s disappointed that he isn’t able to be here today but he has sent a message of good luck to the Lionesses.”
