Plans for baby Reuben’s christening in Emmerdale were going smoothly at the start of Tuesday (August 22)’s episode. The godparents were arranged, the christening gown had been freshly washed and ironed. What could possibly go wrong?

The venue. Chloe (Jessie Elland) got a call with the bad news that the Hide had been double-booked, so there was nowhere to hold the christening party.

Nicola (Nicola Wheeler) overheard this bad news and stepped in to offer the cafe. For the price of a donation for new defibrillator pads – the old ones having been used to revive Bob (Tony Audenshaw) – they could have the christening there. Chloe had her sights set on somewhere grander, and anyway neither she or Mackenzie (Lawrence Robb) ever carry cash apparently so it was a no from them.

Mack’s suggestion of tarting up Moira (Natalie J. Robb)’s barn similarly didn’t go down well with Chloe either, so it was looking like the christening might have to be cancelled.

Then they were having a drink at the Woolpack and Charity (Emma Atkins) – who’d heard about the christening from Nicola – offered the pub for the party. Chloe’s response to this was a derisive snort, thinking that Charity must surely be joking because the last thing she’d want would be a public display of Mack and Chloe playing happy families in her pub.

Charity, however, was quite serious about the gesture and Chloe later apologised to her for the way she reacted. But she still didn’t want to have the do at the Woolpack.

And it wasn’t long before the two women were arguing, with Chloe saying that was exactly the reason she didn’t want Charity hosting the christening because any chance remark had the possibility of turning into an argument.

‘I promise to you – one day – you might just become an interesting person,’ Charity replied.

Chloe clapped back with, ‘Like you were before your mid 40s when your brain and your face and your body started heading south.’

When Charity and Mackenzie were together she occasionally felt insecure about the age difference between them, fearing that one day Mack would go off with someone younger, a fear which obviously came true. Chloe’s attack was a very low blow.

Charity was no longer in a mood to be nice and had a warning about the christening.

‘It doesn’t have to be here for me to ruin it,’ she pointed out. ‘I can ruin it wherever it is. And I just might, if it takes my fancy.’

As we already know that Mackenzie and Charity are set to sleep together again before the christening even takes place, it seems that Chloe could live to regret this particular argument.
