Prince William, Kate Middleton and Princess Anne delighted royal fans this week when the unlikely trio made a surprise appearance on Mike Tindall’s podcast ahead of the upcoming Rugby World Cup matches in France.

The three senior royals joined the former England rugby star, 44, on his show The Good, The Bad and The Rugby alongside co-hosts James Haskell and Alex Payne.

During the special episode, which was filmed at Windsor Castle, sport was at the top of the agenda, with the close knit family not afraid to speak about their love of all things competitive.

According to Mike, his cousin in-law Kate is the most competitive of them all.

During a discussion where Kate was about to open up about her love of team sport, a cheeky Mike interjected: “I'm not going to say you're really competitive… [but] I've seen her play beer pong.”

Feigning shock at the accusation, an amused Kate then replied: “I'm not competitive at all!” before going on to explain how her parents had always been keen to get her involved in sport from a young age.

Explaining how her love for all things athletic had grown over the years, Kate even candidly admitted that she and William never manage to finish games of tennis these days as it becomes a “mental challenge between the two” of them.

During the same episode, Princess Anne also opened up about her daughter Zara ’s Olympic career, as she shared her joy at her triumph during the 2012 Olympics.

Zara, who is married to Mike, famously won the silver medal at the London 2012 Olympics, but it appears she wasn’t so keen to hear advice or pointers from her mum, who is also a keen equestrian.

“If I made a comment I was usually told I was a dinosaur!” recalled Anne.

William meanwhile, had a far fonder memory of the London event, as he fondly looked back on how the event had signalled a “coming together of a nation”

He said: “It was phenomenal and I think Chris Hoy at the velodrome was one of my all-time favourite moments – we were both there shouting and yelling – it was this cauldron of noise and it was just so exciting.”

The Prince continued: “The Paralympics particularly, that was a huge moment for disability sport taking off and it obviously got bigger and bigger since then.”

Kate echoed similar sentiments, but did confess she had been “absolutely gutted” to have missed seeing Andy Murray ’s historic gold medal win against Roger Federer.

The royal family’s appearance on Mike’s podcast came just hours before the Prince and Princess of Wales were due to head to France for this year’s Rugby World Cup.

Kate’s attendance at the group-stage match between England and Argentina on Saturday comes in connection with her role as patron of the Rugby Football Union.

The two nations are due to go head to head at the Stade de Marseille.

Meanwhile, the following day, Prince William, who is the current patron of the Welsh Rugby Union, will be on hand to cheer on the Wales against Fiji at the State de Bordeaux.
