It’s the end of an era for Coronation Street’s iconic pub the Rovers Return in upcoming episodes, which see it boarded up and deserted.

The pub, which has been the centre of the community ever since the first episode of the soap aired in 1960, recently hit financial trouble and current landlady Jenny Bradley (Sally Ann Matthews) feared the business might have to close altogether.

At the eleventh hour it was bought by Newton and Ridley, the brewery whose name has been associated with the pub since the beginning – and all seemed well.

The celebrations didn’t last long, however, as Jenny was soon informed that Newton and Ridley was being sold to another company, Waterford Incorporated. This led to everyone fearing for their jobs, though Jenny did her best to reassure them.

Once again everything settled down and it seemed that things would carry on as normal in the familiar boozer – or as normal as you can get in a pub that has a serial killer living under its roof.

Stephen Reid has recently moved in with Jenny, but what should be a honeymoon period of romantic bliss has been somewhat shaken by the discovery of a dead body at the building site – a body that turned out to have belonged to Jenny’s former boyfriend and Stephen’s first murder victim, Leo (Joe Frost).

While Jenny is getting to grips with this news and also wondering why Leo’s father Teddy (Grant Burgin) hasn’t been in touch about the funeral. Viewers know that there’s a good reason for this: Teddy was Stephen’s second victim, bludgeoned with a hole punch when he got too close to the truth.

As if Jenny didn’t have enough on her plate, Waterford’s decide that now is a good time to carry out extensive refurbishments on the Rovers – which means the pub will have to close and the staff’s contracts have been terminated with immediate effect.

The staff are absolutely devastated at the loss of their livelihood and, for some, their home. Jenny, Glenda (Jodie Prenger), Daisy (Charlotte Jordan), Sean (Antony Cotton) and Gemma (Dolly-Rose Campbell) watch emotionally as workmen from Waterford’s start boarding up the windows.

The Rovers will return – but it will not be the same again.
