A father has been dubbed ‘selfish’ and a ‘spineless coward’ by his wife and daughter after refusing to fork out $200,000 for his daughter’s ‘dream’ destination wedding in New Zealand.

The New York man originally agreed to pay for the wedding but didn’t expect his daughter to pick an international venue.

He believed spending so much money was a ‘pointless show of wealth’ – but the women in his family claimed it didn’t matter because they could afford it.

An additional cost would include paying for several other family members who could not afford to travel from America and find accommodation in New Zealand – which would add on tens of thousands to the bill.

‘My daughter is not talking to me, nor is my wife. Which got me thinking – should I bite the bullet, burn money, and alienate family members to make my daughter’s dream wedding a reality?’ he asked on Reddit.

The father shared a post detailing the situation.

‘My daughter is getting married, and she wishes to have a destination wedding and told her no. She is currently asking for around $200k, which is not counting what guests would have to pay to come.

‘It is 100 per cent a destination wedding, she wants to get married in New Zealand.

‘Many of our family cannot afford to fly to, let alone stay, in NZ. Some of our family members don’t even have passports or have left the country.’

The man claimed that he’d have to end up paying for the extended family because he didn’t want to ‘alienate’ them from an important event.

He also shared that he couldn’t give his daughter a set amount to make her own arrangements because she would trick him.

‘If I give her a set amount, she will use it as a down payment for her dream wedding and put me in a situation where either I foot the bill or waste the time and money of everyone that was meant to come,’ he said.

The father revealed that he was happy to gift his daughter a large amount of money to spend on a house, but a wedding wasn’t worth it in his books.

Thousands sided with him and claimed his daughter was being ‘unreasonable’.

‘If she can’t pay for a destination wedding on her own, then she shouldn’t be having a destination wedding. It seems cruel but it’s true,’ one said. ‘Not to mention there’s so much more money involved with the flights and the hotels and stuff.’

‘Establish the amount of money you are willing to provide and give her the budget. Tell her anything above that is on her. Make sure to mention the amount includes travel, etc for the bridal couple and family members,’ another suggested.

But some claimed he was being selfish for refusing his daughter her dream wedding.

‘You agreed to pay for the wedding before you knew the location. A gift should be given for the recipient, not the giver,’ a woman said.

‘Is this the hill you wanna die on? You said, rather stupidly, you’d pay for the wedding. Now, you’re on the hook. You can afford it – I don’t see the problem,’ a second said.
