Daniel Radcliffe struggled to hold back tears in the first trailer for new documentary, David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived, based on his stunt double who ended up paralysed following an incident on the set of Harry Potter.

In preparation for the filming of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 in 2009, David Holmes was rehearsing a flying scene involving an explosion when he suffered serious spinal injuries. The former gymnast became the Daniel's stunt double for the first movie and the two struck up a close friendship in the following 10 years.

In the first snippet of the show released by HBO, the actor described his stunt double as "a really cool brother" who would "do the most dangerous physical stuff". While performing a dangerous stunt called the "jerk back", which saw him pulled backwards by a high-strength wire, David was slammed into a wall and the impact instantly broke his neck.

Opening up about the tragic incident, Daniel said: "It is unfair, he shouldn't have had to do any of that." He continued: "This terrible thing happened to Dave, but I don't want to talk as if his life is a tragedy.

"The way his life has affected the lives of people around him means that it is the furthest thing from that imaginable." David described his role in the movies as "the best job in the world" before being left wheelchair bound.

Recalling the horrific accident, he said: "I remember straight after breaking my neck I said, 'There's no chance coming back?'". Executive produced by Daniel, the documentary features personal footage from David shot over the last 10 years, including material from his personal life as well as interviews with the Harry Potter star, former crew members, his friends and family.

It also shows how David has learned to live with his disability all while helping others and raising money for charity. The documentary's official logline says: "As Daniel and his closest stunt colleagues rally to support David and his family in their moment of need, it is David’s extraordinary spirit of resilience that becomes their greatest source of strength and inspiration."

David took to Instagram after news of the documentary's release was announced. He penned: "Finally, the day has come. I can now share with you all the secret project and four years' hard work that has gone into creating this film: THE BOY WHO LIVED. Being a stuntman was my calling in life, and doubling Harry was the best job in the world.

"In January 2009, I had a stunt rehearsal accident that changed my life forever." He continued: "This film tells the story of not just my achievements in front of camera, but also the challenges I face every day, and my overall attitude to life after suffering a broken neck. In the turbulent world we find ourselves living in right now, I would like to quote Harry, "We are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided"."
