A man has found a 128-year-old time capsule while knocking down his parent’s old barn and was surprised to find the unusual items inside.

Inside, he found a Mason jar, an old newspaper from August 10, 1894, an issue of Ayer’s American Almanac, a damaged notebook or storybook, and a single black shoe.

The man’s nephew shared the discovery on Reddit, saying: “My uncle uncovered a time capsule from 1984 under the rubble of my grandparent’s barn.”

One Reddit user commented: “I love this kind of stuff. Whoever buried this would never have believed that not only would it be rediscovered over 120 years later, but that almost anyone in the world could get a glimpse.”

Another added: “Kudos to them for encasing it in concrete, amateur time capsules almost never stay dry this long.”

A third joked: “Cool! But would it have killed them to leave a couple of gold coins in there?”

In another surprising find, a man discovered a secret room hidden behind a bookcase in his new house.

The new homeowner had toured the house before buying it, but he didn’t spot the secret room and it wasn’t mentioned in the property listing. It was only after moving in that he discovered the hidden space.

He shared his discovery on Reddit, saying: “Our new house has a secret panic room that wasn’t included in the listing. Built in 1978 and I love this place.”

Don’t miss… He revealed that the hidden room, only accessible through a sliding bookcase in the basement, contained expired canned food and rubbish.

He said: “There were lots of expired canned food, some logs, and a bunch of rubbish that I’ve been tossing.

“We’ve been using it as storage for six months. We are going to sell, donate, and trash stuff to start framing it.”

Follow our social media accounts here on facebook.com/ExpressUSNews
