A former McDonald’s chef has revealed whether the claims about the chain’s Filet-O-Fish ‘getting smaller’ are actually true.

Mike Haracz, who worked for the franchise up until 2019, took to TikTok after being ‘tagged in a bunch of videos’ asking him to respond to speculation that the signature burger was becoming more like a ‘little slider.’

The Illinois-based content creator decided to order the item for himself at the drive-thru before admitting that it did indeed appear to be ‘tiny.’

And other social media users were quick to flood to the comments to share their own thoughts on the revelation.

In the TikTok video, which he shared with his 209,300 followers, Mike started off his playful investigation by asking: ‘Is the Filet-O-Fish getting smaller?’

He explained how recent images from other customers showed the menu item looking ‘much smaller’ than he remembered it.

‘I’m not sure what’s going on so I decided I’m just going to go to McDonald’s right now, buy one Filet-O-Fish and let’s see what it looks like,’ he declared.

The former chef recorded himself picking up the order of a single sandwich which cost $5.42 with tax.

The burger includes a steamed bun, fish filet, half slice of cheese and sauce.

He said: ‘I haven’t been to Subway in a while but like, could you get a six-inch sub with a lot more produce and other stuff on it for about that cost? I mean it seems a bit expensive.’

Mike then opened the box before commenting that it ‘definitely is bigger’ than in some other customer videos but added: ‘It is still certainly tiny.’

‘This looks about average-ish. Actually, the filet itself looks a little thinner than normal. Tastes like a Filet-O-Fish,’ he added.

Mike concluded: ‘I don’t think it’s any smaller than it has been for awhile. It is very expensive.’

Most of his followers agreed that the size of the burger has decreased over time as one person wrote: ‘It’s DEFINITELY being smaller.’

‘Last I saw one, it was a rectangle not square like years ago. Seems trimming an edge gets six fish out of five,’ another person added.

A third person wrote: ‘They definitely shrank and recently. I laughed when I got one recently.’

‘Had one two days ago, the BUN was definitely smaller when I had it,’ wrote a fourth person.

‘They always were small, even in the 70s when I ate them,’ confessed another person.

But, on the other hand, other followers did not think the item changed much in size.

‘Looks standard to me,’ wrote one foodie, as another person commented: ‘It honestly seems the same to me. Price has definitely gotten ridiculous.’

One person had a theory for the decrease in size and wrote: ‘They may be making the fillet thinner because they have a double fish fillet.’

The debate comes after Neily Bob, a US-based content creator posted a video of the Filet-O-Fish and wrote in the caption: ‘McDonald’s Fish Filet is the latest victim of #shrinkflation’

The debate comes after Neily Bob, a US-based content creator posted a video of the Filet-O-Fish and wrote in the caption: ‘McDonald’s Fish Filet is the latest victim of #shrinkflation.’

Shrinkflation is when the size of an item decreases, while the price stays the same or increases, according to Corporate Finance Institute.

The foodie held the burger up and gave his followers a 360 degree view of it and said: ‘It was already small. The Filet-O-Fish has shrunk by, I’d say 20 per cent.

‘It is comically smaller. I know my hands are large but that’s ridiculous.’

But US foodies aren’t the only ones bringing up McDonald’s apparent shrinkages.

One Australian customer posted a picture of the Filet-O-Fish between a McChicken and beef burger to compare the sizes.

The person wrote on a markdown Facebook Group: ‘Have McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish always been this small? I don’t remember it being mini, kid-size like this.’

A spokesperson from McDonald’s said ‘there have been no changes to the size of the burgers.’
