The screen and stage star, whose career spanned more than seven decades, passed away peacefully at home yesterday, surrounded
by relatives.<\/p>\n

Ackland, who was made a CBE for services to drama in 2001, was best known for parts in Hollywood films The Hunt For Red October, White Mischief and Lethal Weapon 2.<\/p>\n

A family statement said: \u201cWith his distinctive voice and commanding presence, Ackland brought a unique intensity and gravitas to his roles. He will be remembered as one of Britain\u2019s most talented and beloved actors.\u201d<\/p>\n

The dad of seven and grandfather of 34 was married to wife Rosemary for 51 years. She died from motor neurone disease in 2002.<\/p>\n

During his career he shared the stage with the likes of Dame Maggie Smith, Dame Judi Dench and Tom Courtenay.<\/p>\n
