A pharmacist has revealed a brilliant hack for reducing those under-eye bags and dark circles when you wake up with in the morning.

Phil Cowley, a Utah-based pharmacist and the owner of Cache Valley Pharmacy, frequently makes content sharing his wisdom about various medical topics and helpful life hacks.

In a video posted to his TikTok account this past September, Cowley explained exactly why people get eye bags, and his tips for how to treat them.

‘Bags under your eyes [are a combination of the tissue structure] and muscle atrophy,’ Cowley revealed.

Utah-based pharmacist Phil Cowley revealed his hack for getting rid of dark undereye bags

As a pharmacist, Cowley often shares his own helpful life hacks on his social media pages

‘So, the muscles break down in your face, ’cause you got older.’

Muscle atrophy is the loss of muscle tissue or the thinning of the muscle, per Mount Sinai.

‘When the muscles weaken it causes more stress in the connective tissue and this breaks down the structures and the skin sags,’ he told DailyMail.com.

‘It can be a reduction of the fat in the area as well. When the muscle is built up the connective tissues has less strain and the bags are reduced.’

‘It reduces the structure underneath the eyes, which then leads to swelling, puffiness and blood pooling, which then leads to bags under the eyes.’

Cowley explained that if you were able to, you could use a radio frequency (RF) device or a microcurrent to reduce the bags long term.

‘The idea of the RF or microcurrent takes the face yoga to the next level,’ Cowley explained to DailyMail.com.

‘They do similar stuff in the derm offices,’ he continued. ‘It really does help a lot to keep muscle tone.’

He recommends to take over-the-counter nasal spray, which is typically used to reduce inflammation and irritation in the nose

‘If you take a little bit of Neo-Synephrine, that’s phenylephrine, it’s actually the same stuff that’s in Preparation H, too, it reduces the size of… the blood vessels,’ he explained

He then recommended to mix the Neo-Synephrine with Arnicare

However, many people are looking for that quick fix for their eye bags the next morning, which is where his handy hack comes in.

He recommends to take over-the-counter nasal spray, which is typically used to reduce inflammation and irritation in the nose, but can also be used for other applications.

‘If you take a little bit of Neo-Synephrine, that’s phenylephrine, it’s actually the same stuff that’s in Preparation H, too, it reduces the size of… the blood vessels that are underneath the eyes,’ he explained.

Cowley furthered to DailyMail.com that the phenylephrine would not fix anything long-term but you will ‘sure see a difference for a little while’ and long enough to take some family pictures.

‘There are a bunch of studies where they are using topical vasoconstriction to help with rosacea and erythema,’ he told DailyMail.com.

‘The concept is the same, short term, just cosmetic for a little while.’

For the next step, he then advised to mix a little bit of the Neo-Synephrine with some Arnica cream, which is available over-the-counter at various drugstores.

The cream is a topical agent that treats ailments like bruises, swelling, joint pains and muscle aches, among others.

‘Arnica will reduce the appearance of bruising, which is the purple kind of look underneath the eye,’ he said.

Speaking to DailyMail.com, Cowley called Arnica the ‘go-to for aesthetics.’

‘Once that’s dried, then go find a product that’s got tranexamic acid, [and] a retinol,’ Cowley explained

Cowley explained that by following these steps, you temporarily reduce your undereye bags

In the comments section, some users joked about the appearance of their under-eye bags

‘It helps the iron in the blood (which is the bruising you see) to oxidize so it helps with appearance not so much healing,’ he told DailyMail.com.

‘But hey, looks are sometimes all we need.’

In the video, he mixed Neo-Synephrine and Arnica cream together, and then patted the concoction underneath his eyes.

‘Once that’s dried, then go find a product that’s got tranexamic acid, [and] a retinol,’ he said.

The pharmacist revealed that the retinol would help to ‘increase the amount of collagen and elastin’ underneath the eye, while the tranexamic acid would ‘lighten the area’ underneath your eye bags.

Tranexamic acid works ‘by blocking the breakdown of blood clots,’ according to The Mayo Clinic, and prevents bleeding.

Cowley also revealed to DailyMail.com a little-known fact about under-eye bags — according to him, a third of all eye bags have a correlation to allergies.

‘Do not forget the nasal steriods if you want to make them disappear,’ he advised.

In the comments section of his video, many users made jokes about how bad their own eye bags had gotten.

‘Mine look like they packing for a trip, I need something,’ one person wrote.

Another agreed, typing, ‘I was born with bags.’
