Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign manager, Jim Messina, is sounding the alarm bells for the Democratic Party and warning them that a 2024 presidential election win for Joe Biden isn’t going to be an easy one. He wants the party to wake up and recognize that Donald Trump is a strong contender — and there’s one more pending issue that could foil the president’s chances.
Messina spoke with Politico’s Playbook about his outline for “Biden’s Strong Case for Re-Election.” He’s predicting that it will be a “close election,” but Democrats should not underestimate the power of Donald Trump, who “has a strong base” that could send him back to the White House. Joe Biden and his team should not be asleep at the wheel because there is a possible danger lurking ahead besides the former president. He believes that a third-party candidate could be “an underappreciated threat” to the current president’s campaign.
“I don’t care what they do. I don’t care how much money they spend. I don’t care who their nominee is. They’re going to get zero electoral votes. The question is who do they take the votes from?” Messina noted. “You just can’t split away votes if you want to beat Donald Trump. And I just cannot overstate how crucial it is to make sure that we don’t create a vehicle that takes enough votes up to elect Donald Trump.” An anti-Trump candidate, who decides to run on the Independent ticket, could be a threat to Joe Biden, so his campaign cannot assume that Donald Trump is his only competitor — they have to prepare for others to enter the race.

Messina doesn’t believe it’s all doom and gloom because if the Democrats prepare for all possible scenarios, there are some strong issues Joe Biden can run on. The abortion issue is rallying young voters to the polls to vote for reproductive healthcare and the president’s “Bidenomics” messaging is making a strong case for his policies. It’s going to be a tough battle at the polls, but Messina believes that Joe Biden will ring victorious in the end.
