Victoria and David Beckham are taking fans back in time to revisit a story that was all over the tabloids in 2003. It wasn’t the happiest period in their marriage, but the couple is finally breaking their silence about how difficult it was for them in the new Netflix documentary, Beckham.
Twenty years ago, David was playing for Real Madrid in Spain while the former Spice Girl remained at home in the U.K. with sons, Brooklyn and Romeo. During their long-distance relationship, two women, Rebecca Loos, David’s personal assistant at the time, and Sarah Marbeck, an Australian model, came forward about their alleged affairs with the athlete. Victoria opened up about the trauma of the very public event.

“It was the hardest period because it felt like the world was against us,” she revealed in the documentary, via The Sun. “Here’s the thing — we were against each other if I’m being completely honest. You know, up until Madrid sometimes it felt like us against everybody else but we were together, we were connected, we had each other. But when we were in Spain, it didn’t really feel like we had each other either.” She described it as a true “nightmare” and the “absolute circus” that followed in the press caused her to “resent” her husband.

David, who denied the allegations, got emotional when he was asked how he “survived” that traumatic time in their marriage. “I don’t know, I don’t know. I don’t know how we got through it in all honesty,” he shared. “Victoria is everything to me. To see her hurt was incredibly difficult, but we’re fighters. We needed to fight for each other and for our family. What we had was worth fighting for.”
The dynamic duo managed to save their relationship and went on to have two more children, son Cruz, and daughter, Harper, while building a business empire. That test of their union ultimately did not destroy them, even though the thought of throwing in the towel did cross their minds. In the end, love wins.
