DIY SOS family with disabled son reveal horror after 'hurtful' accusations

A mother revealed how their dream DIY SOS renovation turned into a nightmare after vicious trolls attacked her family.

Jackie Hutchinson, who made an appearance in the programme with her husband Colin and their three children in October 2019, hailed the experience as the ‘best thing they ever did.’

The Hutchinson family, from Corby, Northamptonshire, worked alongside
TV personality Nick Knowles and his team, who helped modify their home over nine days to support their teenage son Jordan, who suffers from cerebral palsy and epilepsy.

They began shooting the episode before the coronavirus pandemic, which meant the rest was completed last year and the episode didn’t air until May 2022.

Jackie claimed the family faced accusations of being on benefits and selling their house to move to Dubai – which she denies.

She told MailOnline: ‘A few people who had been working on our home and wanted their five minutes of fame started targeting our family on social media, suggesting we were a bit of a con!

‘It was messages, negative comments from people, asking why their donated work hadn’t yet been featured.’

Reflecting on her ordeal after the transformation, Jackie claimed that trolls accused the family of being ‘benefit frauds’ but also said the programme was the ‘most amazing and positive experience and has changed all of our lives.

After forwarding their hate mail to the BBC, the family were advised to disable their social media accounts – which they did.

This comes after a family claimed the show ‘wrecked’ their home.

Peter Chapman and his Cheltenham-based family filmed the popular daytime show in February 2020 but have since found the home inadequate.

It’s claimed that he also asked the organisers not to air the show in June 2022 and has faced embarrassment in his local community since.

A BBC spokesperson told Metro.co.uk: ‘DIY SOS is a heart-warming programme that brings communities together and helps improve the lives of those in need thanks to the hundreds of volunteers who give up their time to participate.

DIY SOS is streaming on BBC iPlayer.
