After 146 days, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) looks like it is over. The dueling organizations reached a tentative agreement on Sunday night, but the real hero of the almost five-months-long work stoppage was The Price Is Right host Drew Carey.

Back in May, the comedian announced that he would pay from writers’ breakfast and lunches (plus tip) at two Los Angeles locations: Bob’s Big Boy in Burbank and Swingers Diner. According to the Substack newsletter Strikegeist, Carey has paid “about $10,000 each week” to Bob’s Big Boy alone — and the final tab should total somewhere between “$400,000 to $600,000” now that the strike is wrapping up for the writers (the actors’ strike is still going on).

The out-of-work artists are more than appreciative of Carey’s efforts, especially since the work stoppage came at a time when inflation was extremely high. “It really has created the Cheers atmosphere for us,” WGA strike captain Jono Matt told the newsletter. “So Drew, you rock.” It’s a gesture that not only the writers appreciate, but the restaurants are also grateful for. They’ve weathered a long pandemic and then were faced with much of the entertainment population out of work all spring and summer. As the Swingers Diner noted on their Instagram account with Carey’s smiling face, “He brings joy wherever he goes. 🥰 #thebest #human #ever #drewcarey #swingersdiner.”

Carey never asked for any recognition during this tough time in Hollywood, he just wanted the writers to have a warm meal in their bellies. When people say there aren’t any nice celebrities in the entertainment industry, they clearly haven’t met Carey yet.
