Jamila Woods Continues ‘Water Made Us’ LP Rollout With New Single “Practice”

Jamila Woods is amping up excitement for her forthcoming third studio album, Water Made Us. The Chicago musician has become known over the past few years for her poignant and poetic lyricism.

In August, Woods released a music video for another cut from the album, “Boomerang,” set at the Chicago Magic Lounge. She also dropped the song “Good News.”

With just a few days left before the LP drops on Friday, October 13, Woods has shared another Water Made Us single, a collaboration with fellow Chicago native Saba called “Practice.”

Produced by McClenney, “Practice” is a funky, soul-filled rumination on an easygoing, effortless kind of love. Throughout the song, Woods dips between singing and moments of rapping the lyrics, matching Saba’s smooth flow.

“We could stop time for the free throw / Got more patience than a tree grow,” she sings. “Got love that feels like a cheat code / No stress no nothing heavy.”

An accompanying music video directed by Carlos López Estrada sees Woods perform the song surrounded by sporadically appearing body parts, from faces to hands and feet.

“”Practice” is a song I made with McClenney about releasing the pressure we put on ourselves in relationships. I was trying to shift how I often evaluate relationships based on their potential for longevity rather than on how I feel in the moment,” Woods said. “The song is about how we can learn to just enjoy ourselves and be present with someone without needing to ‘get everything right’ or ‘have everything together.’ My friend Carlos López Estrada came up with this concept of creating faces with bodies in a way that’s sensual and silly at the same time.”
