The Last of Us debuted earlier this year on HBO Max, drawing in nearly 5 million viewers on the day of its premiere. The post-apocalyptic drama was adapted from the video game of the same name, created by Naughty Dog and Sony.
Fans have been eagerly awaiting a new season of the series and HBO Max has finally given an update. In its The One to Watch trailer, the streamer shared that a second season would be premiering in 2025.
Production on The Last of Us will begin on February 12, showrunner Craig Mazin revealed to Variety. The second season is expected to follow the same storyline as The Last of Us Part II video game.
Released in 2020, Part II takes place four years after the events of the inaugural game. Joel and Ellie have settled down in Wyoming. While on patrol, Joel and Tommy rescue a stranger from an infected horde, kicking off a series of treacherous events.
In another interview, Mazin told IGN that the second season was “more than a season’s worth of television, for sure,”
“It’s a big animal to take apart, you know?” he said. “Because it’s a much bigger story and it’s a more complicated story. It’s a beautiful story.”
Stay tuned for more updates on season two of The Last of Us.
