We’ve probably all heard of or seen a menstrual cup, but this one in particular is making big waves in the period game with some users saying it’s ‘changed their lives’.

So we had to try it.

When it comes to our periods, we like to think we could be like the girls in the cool adverts who, despite shedding their uterine lining, just cannot wait to jump on the back of a horse, dive into a pool or stay on top of their fitness regime in the gym.

But instead we always find ourselves on the sofa in the fetal position, watching back-to-back episodes of dishy Captain Jason in Below Deck.

With mood swings, bloating and cramps, periods don’t exactly have us bursting with energy. Especially when we’re suffering from a heavy flow. You know, the kind that gives you horrifying visions of Carrie at the prom or that horrible scene with the elevator in The Shining (if you know, you know).

And while you may have tried an extra large tampon, a giant nighttime pad during the day or doubled up with both tampon and pad, it can still feel like it’s not enough.

But now there’s a menstrual cup that is designed for heavier periods and customers have been left seriously impressed.

The Nixit disc-style menstrual cup is made from soft silicone so it’s flexible and conforms to you. The design even has a double rim for extra leak protection.

Nixit menstrual cup

You may wonder how a cup can keep you protected from accidental leaks but guess what? Nixit claims that the cups can hold the same amount as four super tampons. That maths is mathing.

If you’re wondering why some people refer to the Nixit cup as a disc, it’s because it doesn’t rely on suction to stay in place and has a circular design.

Some reviews say that the suction element of other cups caused cramps and pains but this design is so painless and comfortable.

‘When I used other cup products, the suction caused such severe cramps that I only used it one time and cried when struggling to get it out,’ one reviewer said.

‘I haven’t had any cramps since switching to the Nixit cup,’ they added.

In other words, the menstrual cup is a gamechanger for periods. And that’s exactly how customers have described the Nixit cup in their glowing reviews.

One satisfied customer said: ‘I forget I’m on my period, I’m so happy with it.”

Another added: ‘The Nixit changed my life. Tampons are never absorbent enough and leaks are frequent. I finally decided to try the Nixit and it. Changed. My. Life. No pains, NO LEAKS!!!’

Metro tries the Nixit disc

‘I bit the bullet and tried the Nixit disc on day 2 of my cycle – notoriously a pretty heavy day. Let’s dive in head first…so to speak.

‘Not going to lie, if you’re squeamish, these discs may be a bit of an eye opener, because as you’re trying to get the hang of using the darn thing, to borrow the title of that Daniel Day-Lewis film, there will be blood.

‘After watching a few instructional videos and combing through the leaflet that comes with the disc, I felt pretty confident getting it in would be a cinch. While, sure, getting it into a comfortable position isn’t that hard, provided you have room to pop a bit of a squat in your bathroom, it’s a true art to make sure it’s in the right position in order to catch the blood.

‘Once it was in, I couldn’t feel it and, true to reviews, I didn’t have any cramps.

‘I managed to wear it for 3 hours before curiosity got the better of me and I wanted to see how it was working. Firstly, simply hooking a finger under the rim and pulling it out wasn’t possible for me (there is certainly some good strength in these kegels, apparently) but I found after essentially bearing down it peeked out from behind my pelvic bone and came out super easily.

‘Still, things were incredibly messy. While I had only a tiny leak on a panty liner I wore as a safety measure, there was hardly any blood in the actual disc. It seemed to have been either pooling around it, cascading down when the floodgates were finally let open.

‘Not sure what I was doing wrong, but determined to persevere I really made sure to push it down and back when reinserting, which, that time, meant it was hopefully sitting higher and in a better position. The next time I checked the disc it seemed to be doing a much better job.

”Besides the beginner errors, this is proving to be a nice alternative to tampons – which, despite having worn for nearly 20 years, I still live in fear of giving me TSS (I know, I know).

‘I also feel like a total sustainable hun, so that helps.’

Another great thing about menstrual cups is that they save you a ton of money. The Nixit may be £40 but it’s completely re-usable. It’s simple to clean with warm water and soap and between cycles you can sterilise it by boiling in hot water for five minutes.

‘I have saved so much money!’ one customer said.

If you’re confused as to how to use it, Nixit have some very helpful videos that demonstrate the application and removal with ease.
