The Crown season six teased in Netflix trailer

Part one of the final season of The Crown landed on Netflix today and the opening has left many fans in shock.

While it has been widely reported that the first part would deal with events leading up to the death of Diana, Princess of  Wales, viewers weren’t expecting the opening scene to depict her fatal car crash in Paris.

While the accident isn’t actually broadcast and is handled sensitively off-screen, it is a discombobulating beginning to the hugely hyped season and fans were not expecting it.

The scene showed a man watching on as a speeding car was chased by motorbikes before a collision was heard.

He called the emergency services and it was clear who the people in the speeding car were as the titles rolled.

A user with the handle @piercetheteixas was also surprised by the decision as they said: “The crown really opened the new season with the crash like damn.” (sic)

While @thegoodgirlgene wrote: Starting with the ACCIDENT? Brave. #TheCrown.” (sic)

@shiela_sg commented: “They actually started with that crash #TheCrown.”

“Yes, I searched “The Crown crash” because WHAT,” @iboukane99 echoed. (sic)

Meanwhile, @SadieLoove was blown away by the opening scenes as they wrote: “The first 5 minutes of Season 6, #TheCrown gave me chills and goosebumps!”

After the crash scene, the show did a flashback from eight weeks prior which shared Diana’s (played by Elizabeth Debicki) whirlwind romance with Dodi al-Fayed (Khalid Abdalla).

The first three episodes are more or less dedicated to Diana and Dodi’s burgeoning love with episode three depicting her last day culminating, yet again, in the inevitable crash which took place on August 31, 1997.

The news of Diana’s death at the age of 36 sent shockwaves around the world and plunged the nation into mourning as tens of thousands of people visited Buckingham Palace to pay their respects.

Dodi and the driver Henri Paul died instantly, whilst the Princess of Wales was pronounced dead in hospital at 4am. The only survivor of the crash was Trevor Rees-Jones, who was Dodi’s bodyguard.

Season six, part one of The Crown is now streaming on Netflix.
