How long did it take for Queen Elizabeth to accept Camilla?
Speaking exclusively to Daily Express, author of Queen Victoria’s Descendants and historical expert Marlene Koenig stated: “That is something we don’t know for sure.
“I think the Queen and the Royal family learned a lot about how to handle relationships with the failure of Charles and Diana’s marriage.
“Camilla would not have been what was considered ‘suitable’ for a Royal bride because she wasn’t a virgin and neither was Charles.”
Marlene continued: “That said, you had Charles marry Diana, who was a virgin … I think the real issue was not Camilla herself.

“I think she [Queen Elizabeth II] had to not show great enthusiasm for Camila, although knowing that Camilla was far better suited to be Charles’ wife.”
Speaking on their relationship, the author added: “I think as time passed, the Queen saw how happy her son was and how her son changed.
“Doing engagements together, having similar interests, especially with horses, it evolved over time and embracing the fact that Camilla was very much in Charles’ life.
Marlene added “She [Camilla] was given the family order not that long after the wedding, just a couple of years, getting the garter before Charles became King was really in my view a big deal.
“The Order of the Garter which is the Highest Order of Chivalry in England, the Queen really opened it up wide, from Henry VII women were never given the Garter until Edward VII.
“Queen Victoria only got the Garter when she became Queen because she became Head of the Order.”
